Critiques
The subject matter is not particularly stunning, yet the photograph grabs me. The two dark trees at either side provide perfect balance. Their dark branches in the upper foreground give a wonderful sense of depth, balanced by the background fading to fog.
The colors are sharp and clear, but muted rather than vivid. That's good; they convey a certain mood. The "pure" darkness of those two trees in the foreground, and sharp red leaves to the lower right, keep the "muted" tone from being washed out and boring.
I love the top-to-bottom composition. We have the gray and fog in the upper half, balanced by the literal mirror image in sharp colors highlighted with yellow and red.
I see red leaves and evergreens in the background, a different green on the left branch jutting away from us, balanced by the fence to the right. This subtle variety "makes" the composition for me.
I'm not sure how to best describe it, but it's the balance (so many different facets are balanced), and the muted details which caught my attention, grabbing me to come over for a closer look.
I gave you five stars for Technique and less than five for the other measures, because I see this as a "typical" still life in woods image brilliantly captured and displayed for us.
